A Beginner’s Guide to Playing Poker

It comes in hundreds of different versions played all over the world both professionally and for fun. This incredible card game is easy to learn and here each player masters his own fate.

The pack of cards

All poker games begin with the standard 52-card pack. Depending on the number of hands in the game, the number of packs can be increased. Generally, the game is played with only one pack, but today all games played in clubs use more than 3–5 hands, and use two packs of contrasting colors to speed up the game. You should learn to play poker like a pro to play professionally.

When one pack is being used, the other pack is shuffled and equipped for the next deal. For a play involving two packs, the previous player assembles all the dealt cards while the game is in progress. He shuffles them and places the cards to his left. When the new pack is totally dealt, the next dealer gets the previously assembled pack, and this continues until the game ends.

Scoring in the game of poker

Poker can be played in numerous forms, but if you’re aware of the poker hand values and basic principles of the game, you can manage to play any type of poker. In poker, the hands of the players are ranked from the highest to the lowest. The basic game points are calculated as follows:

Five of a Kind – It’s the highest point scorer where at least one wild card is used. It can be a joker, four deuces, or two one-eyed jacks.

Straight Flush – When the wild cards are not used, a straight flush is the highest point scorer. It consists of same suit of five cards appearing in a sequence, like 8, 7, 6, 5, and 4 of clover. A, K, Q, J, and 10 are a special kind of straight flush called the royal flush.

Four of a Kind – This the 2nd most scoring finish. Here 4 cards of the same number are used; the 5th could be any other card.

Full House – This is a very colorful hand. It has 3 cards of a rank; the other 2 cards can be of some other rank. It can be three 8’s and two 5’s or any other such combinations.

Flush – In flush, a hand can produce 5 cards of the same suit. They don’t have to be in sequence at all. It can be J, 9, 7, 2, and A of clubs, or any such combination from same suit.

Straight – Here 5 cards in sequence should be produced by a hand. These cards don’t have to be from the same suit.

Three of a Kind – This combination of cards requires 3 cards of the same rank, and 2 cards of another rank. It can be like 3 jacks of different suits, and a 7 and 4 of hearts.

Two pairs – A pair of cards in one rank and another pair of different can be produced. The 5th can be any random card. It can be, like QQ, 77, and 4.

One pair – This is the frequently produced combination, and has 2 cards of the same rank. The other 3 cards can be random. One pair constitutes cards, like 88, 9, A, and 5.

No pair – This combination doesn’t have any points, because none of the cards pair up.

A bet is placed by every player, and depending on the hands they produce their winnings are shared. The one with the highest points get the maximum bet, while one who produces a “no pair” won’t get anything in return.

Understanding these simple procedures will help you learn to play poker like a pro. You’re now ready to start! Just get your hands on the table.
